Yamaha's innovative AFC technology to receive wider distribution.

First implemented by Yamaha in 1985, Active Field Control (AFC) is an acoustic conditioning system designed to adjust and enhance the architectural acoustic characteristics of facilities such as performance arts venues, houses of worship, theatres and concert halls—while maintaining the natural sonic characteristics of the space. This is achieved by generating feedback loops of microphones and speakers located in the reverberant field of the room to ‘recycle’ the reverberant energy, effectively extending the reverb time.

Yamaha's AFC systems create and utilize varying reverb time settings to suit different performance applications within the same facility. For example, the system can be used to add a sense of ‘spaciousness’ to under-balcony or stage areas, offering all audience members and performers the same shared sense of connection to the music. AFC systems can also be used to add early reflections or as crowd enhancement systems.

As the most trusted name in acoustic enhancement systems technology, Yamaha supports over 80 facilities in the U.S. And Japan, and now with the release of the improved and more cost-effective AFC3, a much wider range of facilities worldwide will have access to the best AFC systems available today.

“With 125 years of experience manufacturing musical instruments as well as decades of experience designing concert halls, Yamaha has strived to provide musicians and performers with outstanding sound quality, while delivering the best live experience possible for the audience”, said Kazunori Kobayashi, General Manager of Yamaha Pro Audio Division. “With the release of the AFC3, we are very happy to be able to offer this experience to an even wider range of installations and venues. These days there is increasing pressure on facilities to be more multi-purpose, and by utilizing the innovative technologies of the AFC3 many more customers around the globe will be able to get the best possible use from their facility.”

AFC3 is the 3rd generation of AFC technology and incorporates the latest advances in hardware and software development from Yamaha. These advances have both improved the performance of AFC and at the same time made it more cost-effective as the AFC3 system and AFC-FIR card provide both input processing and 4-22 channels of output processing in a single unit.
