Classical Guitar Grade 5-3

1. Reception

Present the admission slip for examination at the reception desk.

2. Practical Section Examination

Follow the instructions given by the person in charge.

10 minutes will be given for preview for Improvisation.

3. Paperwork Examination

Enter the room: Hand the admission slip to the examiner.

  • Note:
  • In the preview room, candidates are allowed to use a guitar during this preparation, but they are not allowed to write any notes on the score.
  • In the examination room, candidates should follow the instructions of the examiners.
  • In the examination room and the preview room, candidates must switch off their mobile phones.

10 minutes of preparatory study for arranging in a separate room is given to each candidate. The candidate is allowed to use a guitar during this preparation, but she/he is not allowed to write any notes on the score. The candidate should play just the arrangement of the given melody in the examination room as soon as she/he is ready.

Contents & Level

Grade 5, 4

An 8 to 16 bar theme must be arranged and performed at the time of the examination.

Grade 3

A given theme must be arranged in two or three chorus form and performed.

Points of Evaluation

Grade 5, 4

The ability to play the given theme as it is written.

The ability to play the appropriate accompaniment based on the given chords.

Grade 3

The ability to play the given theme with appropriate chords.

The ability to make the musical variations. (Melody variation, changing accompaniment style, change of tone range, varying time etc.)

Contents

Candidates will be given two pieces as solo and duet.

It may be in any key or time (meter).

Procedure

For every grade, candidates are to start playing after a preview of about 60 seconds, following the instructions of the examiner.

60-seconds preview time is given for each solo and duet.

Points of Evaluation

The ability to reproduce what is written in the score. (tempo, strength, articulation, etc.)

The ability to play in the flow of the piece without replaying.

Number of Pieces Required

The number of Compulsory Pieces, and Free Selections required for each grade is shown below. Any candidates offering repertoire inconsistent with the requirements may be disqualified. The examiners will decide which pieces will be played at the examination.

General Remarks on Repertoire

It is highly recommended that candidates play all the pieces by memory.

In case the candidate needs to use the score, a request to turn pages will be denied. They will have to turn the pages by themselves.

Points of Evaluation

Candidates will be evaluated in terms of both performance technique and expression.

The higher the grade, the higher the level of performance expression is required.

The ability to express the appeal of the music

The ability to understand and express the style of the music

The ability to play with a tone/sound that matches the music

The ability to play with a sense of phrase etc.

Compulsory Piece

One compulsory piece should be chosen in advance from each group (a, b and c). One of these three will be chosen by the examiner at the time of the examination. In the case of a suite, the candidate will be requested to play one or two movements.

Pieces not listed below will not be counted as compulsory pieces. If candidates do not meet the requirements, they may be disqualified.

Free Selection

The free selection pieces may be any pieces on the same level of difficulty as the compulsory pieces (they may be chosen from the compulsory piece groups). One of these pieces will be chosen by the examiner at the time of the examination.
